Comprehensive training is essential for all heating engineers, to ensure that they fully understand the demands of the industry and can achieve the required regulatory standards. EOGB offers a whole range of specialist oil and gas training courses, including OFTEC training and ACS courses, all run from our purpose-built facility near St Neots, Cambridgeshire.

OFTEC is the trade association for the oil heating and cooking industry in the UK. Established in 1990, it takes a lead role in setting industry standards, promoting the highest professional standards in the industry and manages registrations for engineers and technicians who install, commission and service oil and renewable heating equipment.

OFTEC Training Courses

EOGB offers courses enabling people to undertake a number of OFTEC assessments and is a Logic approved training centre. The OFTEC training courses offered are:

OFTEC 50

This is a practical and intensive OFTEC oil course aimed at operatives with little or no experience of domestic oil installations. The course covers areas such as safety requirements, boiler maintenance, ventilation and commissioning and aims to help the candidate reach the required level to enable them to undertake the standard assessments. There are no entry requirements but plumbing skills would be a significant advantage.

Following completion of the course, candidates will be able to undertake the OFTEC 101, OFTEC 105E, and OFTEC 600A standard oil assessments.

OFTEC 101, 102, 105E, 600A

This is a combined assessment package that is comprised of four courses. These are:

OFTEC 101 – domestic and light commercial pressure jet appliance commissioning and service

OFTEC 102 – commissioning, servicing and assessment of domestic vaporising appliances

OFTEC 105E – domestic oil-fired installations

OFTEC 600A – oil storage and supply

As a burner manufacturer EOGB is able to provide a much more thorough level of training compared to a conventional OFTEC training course. This is because we add extra practical burner training, a vital part of an oil operative’s work.

Other Training Courses

ACS training and assessment

This is a two day course for gas engineers who must be deemed competent under the ACS scheme to work within the gas industry. The course covers the most popular elements of the ACS scheme which are:

CCN1 – main gas safety core required for all engineers

CENWAT – water heaters and central heating boilers

CKR1 – gas cookers

HTR1 – gas fires

Once the engineer has completed the ACS training and assessment course, the gas safe register will be notified and they will be deemed as competent. Once an engineer is registered with the Gas Safe Register they are required by the health and safety directive to undergo reassessment every five years.

New entrant domestic gas training

We offer two gas courses for new entrants in the gas industry:

EOGB domestic gas foundation course – a five day course which covers the basic grounding of gas practices

New entrant course – a ten day course which covers further modules such as chimney testing, open flue testing and fire installation practices

Once an engineer has completed these courses, and a series of gas related practices away from the training centre, they can then move on to the standard ACS course and take steps to become a registered gas safe engineer.

Domestic oil burner training

This is a practical one day course aimed at people who are new to the industry as well as experienced engineers and covers topics including correct combustion, fault finding and boiler/burner servicing.

The training is highly practical and engineers have the opportunity to fire and run burners in the EOGB training facility.

Commercial burner training

Every summer EOGB runs a week-long commercial burner training course in Bologna, Italy. This course covers training on oil, gas and dual-fuel burners from 50-2000kW as well as topics such as commissioning, gas valve set up and burner matching.

This is a very hands-on course and provides invaluable experience for engineers who are working or intending to work on commercial forced draft burners.

Hot water systems and safety (unvented)

This course covers all hot water systems and is designed to give the information and training required by installers wishing to self-certify their installations.

The course is recognised by the Competent Persons Scheme which allows installers self-certification under Approved Document G.

Water regulation

This EOGB course is essential in order to comply with local water regulations, and for all water system installers who want to be able to self-certify their work. It covers topics such as legislation, system design and installation and health and safety.

Engineers who complete this course will be awarded the WRAS certificate and card enabling them to apply for approved plumbing contractor status with the Water Authorities.

Energy efficiency for domestic boilers

This one day course is for installers requiring an Energy Efficiency in Domestic Heating certificate, allowing them to self-certify their work rather than paying Building Control.

The course covers areas such as the combustion process, energy saving devices and commissioning.
